Offered here is a photograph of Civil War veteran William M. Potter in civilian clothes.
This is a trimmed cabinet card measuring approximately 4.25” x 8”. Image is full standing view of Potter, well dressed with hat and jacket in hands, posed among some rocks. The photographer’s imprint is at the bottom of the mount, “Johnson Bros. Washington, DC.”
A fine pen & ink inscription is on the reverse, “Sincerely Yours, Wm. M. Potter, War Department, Washington D[C], Sept. 15/8[?]” and “Late Capt of Co A 9th PA Cavalry [Se]pt 17/61 – July 25/65.”
Photograph remains good with light edge wear from trimming.
William M. Potter was from Perry County in 1842 and enlisted on 10/3/1861 as a 1st Sergent in Company “A” of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was wounded at Readyville, TN, in September of 1864. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 5/21/1863, and Captain on 6/18/1865. He was Mustered Out on 7/18/1865 at Lexington, NC. In 1882 he began work as a clerk in the Adjutant General’s Office in Washington, where was employed until his death in 1919. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. [jet] [ph:L]
