A circa 1890 cabinet card format copy of a wartime photo of a Civil War cavalryman showing off what appears to be a M1855 Joslyn carbine and his saber to the folks back home. Copy images of this date and format were often the only likenesses of a family member who joined the army and did not make it back home. The original format was likely a tintype, shown by the lateral reversal of the image, a little softness of focus at the very top and bottom, and a slight shadow in a curve along the bottom that may be from an oval mat removed by the copyist.
The trooper is shown seated, from the knees up. He wears a regulation cavalry shell jacket with high collar and twelve-button front, piped on the collar, cuffs, and lapel. A company letter “H” is visible on the front of his tall forage cap. He wears a saber belt with shoulder support belt in place. On the right he holds a carbine by the wrist of the stock, upright against his shoulder. On the left he holds his sheathed cavalry saber with saber knot upright for the camera.
The original photographer seems to have tinted his collar piping, but not much else. The focus was a bit soft on the face and the copyist enhanced the soldier’s eyes, but he clearly has a thin chin beard and perhaps faint mustache and the copyist, like the original photographer does not seem to have done much else. The resolution and clarity are quite good overall and a good deal of detail can be made out: the smooth surface of his bridle leather gear, even the turk’s head knot and tassels of his saber knot, and details of his rectangular, 1851 pattern, eagle sword belt plate, the shiny finish on his cap box, that the saber is clearly a M1840. He has not bothered to rearrange things to compensate for the reversal of the image. His carbine appears to be a M1855 “Monkeytail” Joslyn with his hand concealing the ringed loading lever. If that is correct, and please form your own judgement on it, he may be an early war Ohio trooper- the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th Ohio cavalry are known to have received issues of the carbine. The photo measures 3-3/4" x 5-1/2" on a 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" mount. [sr][ph:L]
