This post-war image of Wilmon Blackmar features the former officer and Medal of Honor Recipient standing before an elaborate studio setting in full dress uniform. The image is mounted to a white card, bearing the text “ELMER CHICKERING & Co. / BOSTON”. Blackmar is wearing his GAR Commander ribbon badge, a position he filled from 1904-1905 (his death).
The reverse is clean and free of major wear. No text is noted. Dimensions are 5.25” x 7.6”.
Wilmon Blackmar first enlisted in the 15th PA Cavalry, working his way up through the non-commissioned ranks. He resigned to accept a commission as First Lieutenant of Company H of the 1st West Virginia Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his brave and aggressive actions at the Battle of Five Forks in 1865. After the war, he became the Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, a celebrity veteran advocate, and something of a known curator of the furniture used by Grant and Lee at Appomattox.
An excellent photo of one of the Civil War’s most enduring Union Veterans. [cm][ph:L]
