A full-length albumen portrait on an elongated ("panel" style) cabinet mount, roughly 4 × 8 in., depicting a young National Guardsman in full dress against a painted studio backdrop of trees, a rustic fence, and distant hills.

The soldier wears the U.S. Model 1881 spiked dress helmet for foot troops, with brass eagle helmet plate, top spike and base, and chin chain. His dark wool dress coat is single-breasted with a standing collar and a full row of buttons, finished with shoulder knots and ornamented cuffs. Two small badges—consistent with marksmanship or unit competition medals—are pinned at the left breast. He wears a white dress waist belt with a stamped belt plate, and his trousers carry a stripe down the outer seam. In his right hand he holds a single-shot rifle, muzzle down, consistent with a .45-70 Springfield "trapdoor."

The reverse bears a faded photographer's imprint, now largely ghosted, with the state abbreviation "N.J." still legible—confirming a New Jersey studio.

Condition: Mount with light soiling, minor edge and corner wear, and scattered foxing to the verso; image clear with good contrast. Housed in a protective sleeve.  [SS][ph:L]
