Carte de Viste of the 1841 Cadet Library and Observatory building, a historic Military Gothic facility that served the United States Military Academy (USMA) for over a century before being demolished in the 1960s.
Image is horizontal in format. Clear with good contrast; view from side. No photographer's backmark.
Built in 1841, the castle-like stone building featured castellated towers, crenellated parapets, and a prominent astronomical observatory dome. The interior featured grand multi-tier alcoves, fine wood cabinetry, stained glass window features, large terrestrial globes, and portrait galleries. Due to expanding student enrollment, the structure was entirely torn down in 1961–1962 to clear space for a larger facility. [jet] [ph:L]
