This horizontal Carte de Visite (CDV) is a photo print of a lithograph of the USS New Ironsides by the prominent Philadelphia lithographer William H. Rease.
The card features an 1863 lithograph depiction of the USS New Ironsides, a prominent broadside ironclad warship built for the United States Navy during the Civil War. The USS New Ironsides was a 4,120-ton armored frigate constructed in Philadelphia by Merrick & Sons. Launched in 1862, it served powerfully in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, participating in major naval assaults against Confederate fortifications at Charleston, South Carolina. The artwork was created by William H. Rease, who was one of the most prolific commercial and advertising lithographers in Philadelphia during the mid-19th century.
The image is fine but the intricate detail of the original lithograph seems lost in the photograph copy. The copyright inscription across the bottom reads: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1863, by W. H. Rease, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania."
Image is on a plain, unadorned mount. Backmark is from Wm. H. Rease, Philadelphia. [jet] [ph:L]
