CDV is a humorous cartoon caricature of the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Cartoons such as this ran in Northern newspapers based on the false rumor that Davis was captured wearing women’s clothes. He was, in fact, wearing his wife’s shawl for warmth, as he had taken ill over the past few days since fleeing Richmond. This image shows Davis in a dress, as the Union soldiers are accosting him. It shows a young girl asking, “Please let my old mother go to the spring?” The two soldiers answer, “Certainly” and, “How are you Jeff?”.
Bottom of mount is labeled with the copyright for Wm. H. Mumler, 1865.
Reverse has the seller’s imprint, “JOSEPH WARD, 125 WASHINGTON STREET, BOSTON”.
Image is clear and the contrast is good. Surface has some light dirt from age. [SM]
