This is a vignette bust view of Colonel Henry O. Kent. He is shown wearing a double-breasted frock coat and shoulder boards.  Image is fairly clean. No photographer’s mark on back. Modern pencil inscription reads “Col. Henry O. Kent, 17th N. H. Vol. Inf.” ID is confirmed by on-line database.

Henry Kent was 28 years old and living in Lancaster, New Hampshire when he was commissioned Colonel of the 17th New Hampshire on October 23, 1862. He was Colonel of the regiment until his muster out on April 16, 1863. The 17th was a 9-month regiment that was never fully organized. The regiment was cannibalized to fill out the ranks of the 15th and 16th New Hampshire regiments. What was left of the 17th after that was sent to the 2nd New Hampshire. Despite his men being taken from him Henry Kent remained listed as Colonel of the 17th – a very unusual situation.
