Bust view CDV of Morton wearing a dark double-breasted frock coat with colonel’s shoulder straps.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are good, but the paper does have some light surface dirt above Morton’s head. Bottom center of the mount has a period ink inscription of “COL. THOMAS MORTON.”

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint of TH. GUBELMAN…PULASKI, TENN. At bottom is a period ink signature that reads “TRULY YOURS TOM MORTON.”

Thomas Morton was born in Ohio on August 15, 1827.

He served through the Mexican War with Company F, United States Mounted Rifles and was severely wounded in front of Mexico City.

At the start of the Civil War he was first commissioned captain of Company C, 20th Ohio Infantry on April 17, 1861 and was promoted to colonel of the regiment the following May 23rd. The regiment served in West Virginia for three months and was mustered out on August 18, 1861.

Morton next raised the 81st Ohio for three years’ service and due to disputes with the state Governor, spent much of his own money to outfit and supply the regiment. He led the 81st at Shiloh, Corinth, Resaca, Rome and Dallas before resigning on July 30, 1864.

After the Civil War Morton, being almost bankrupt, moved to Indiana where he was involved in the hotel business.

He died in Middletown, Indiana on September 14, 1905 and is buried in Mound Hill Cemetery in Eaton, Ohio.  [AD]
