Very nice, bright view of Dr. John L. LeConte. He wears a double breasted frock coat with lieutenant colonel’s shoulder straps. He is posed with one hand at his waist and his other by his side holding his kepi.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount are good however mount corners are clipped. Bottom of the mount has photographer’s mark and period ink ID that reads “DR. LECONTE 1866.”

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for JOHN L. GIHON…PHILADELPHIA. There is also a 2 cent tax stamp with a very clear cancellation mark dated March 17, 1865.

John L. LeConte was born in New York on May 13, 1825. He was commissioned as a surgeon on the US Volunteer Medical Staff on June 9, 1862. He was promoted lieutenant colonel and Medical Inspector on August 29, 1863 and was mustered out on October 31, 1865.

After the war he was known for his work in entomology and natural history. He died in Philadelphia on November 15, 1883 and is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.    [AD]
