Seated studio view of Codman in uniform. He has a double-breasted frock with shoulder straps. He also wears a sword belt and holds his Field & Staff sword in his lap. Clear image with very good detail and contrast. Plain mount with photographer's backmark, Whipple, Boston. Pencil identification on back.
Codman lived in Boston, MA and was a 32 year-old lawyer when he enlisted on 3/12/1861 as a Captain in the Boston Cadets. He was mustered out on 7/2/1862 at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor to accept a commission as Colonel of the 45th Mass. Infantry. He was mustered out on 7/7/1863 at Readville, MA.
The 45th Mass. was a 9-month unit that spent its time in the Department of North Carolina.
