CDV is identified at bottom center of the mount with a period ID that is difficult to decipher. It looks to read "FATHER ????? ??? CUTTER MD. CIVIL WAR 1861" Image shows the subject seated wearing a dark frockcoat and matching vest and trousers. Clearly visible on one shoulder is a 1st lieutenant's shoulder strap with "MS" for Medical Service at center.
Contrast and clarity are excellent.
Reverse has a photographer's imprint for C. D. FREDRICKS & CO. ... NEW YORK, HABANA and PARIS.
Research shows a George R. CUTTER from New York City who was commissioned surgeon in the 127th New York on July 23, 1862 and mustered out at Charleston, S.C. on June 30, 1865. The 127th New York served with several different Corps in both Virginia and South Carolina.
There was also a Joseph L. CUTLER who served as assistant surgeon in the 134th New York from March of 1863 to January 3, 1864 when he was discharged for disability. The 134th New York served with the 11th Corps Army of the Potomac and later with the 20th Corps, Army of Ohio and Cumberland. [ad] [ph:L]
