Tanner joined Company A, 44th New York Infantry on August 30, 1861 when he was 20 years old. He was promoted to Commisary Sergeant in September. He was then discharged for disability in May of 1862.

On January 3, 1863 he joined the 12th New York Cavalry as a 2nd lieutenant. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant on January 8, 1864 and resigned 18 days later.

This cdv was part of the Ray Richie collection and was with three other photos of Tanner. [jet] [ph:L]
