CDV is of Davis E. James of Company G, 81st Ohio Infantry posed standing with one hand resting on a table. He wears a dark “roundabout” or shell jacket with a fold down collar. The jacket is open at the midpoint to reveal a striped shirt, white handkerchief and a watch chain. He also wears light trousers.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are lightly toned with light scattered surface dirt. Bottom left corner of mount is slightly curled. Bottom of mount has a period ink signature that reads “TRULY YOURS, D. E. JAMES.”

Reverse is blank.

Davis E. James was born in 1835. He was 26 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company G, 81st Ohio Infantry on November 21, 1861. He was transferred to Company F on August 9, 1862 and less than a month later was promoted to commissary sergeant on September 1, 1862 but was reduced to ranks on May 30, 1864. James was mustered out on November 20, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee.

While with the 81st James would have seen action at Shiloh, Corinth, Resaca, Rome Cross Road, Dallas, Atlanta and Lovejoy Station.

James died in 1908 and was buried in Rivercliff Cemetery, Mount Gilead, Ohio.  [AD]
