Image is a full standing view of William N. Starke who was the son of General William Edwin Starke killed at Antietam.

William is posed with his hands by his side holding his kepi in hie right hand. The cap is decorated with braid around the base and on top of the crown. He wears a light-colored double-breasted frockcoat with matching trousers. Visible on the coat are galloons running up the sleeve. On his collar are the two horizontal bars of a 1st lieutenant.

Clarity and contrast are good. Mount and paper have light surface dirt but are otherwise good. Bottom center of the mount has a period ink ID of “W. N. STARKE MAJ. + A.A.G.”

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for VANNERSON…RICHMOND, VA. Imprint is partially obscured by ink spot. There is also some collector information in pencil.

William Norborne Starke was born in Virginia on November 8, 1835. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and later relocated with his family to Louisiana.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Starke was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in Company E, 1st Louisiana Infantry on April 21, 1861. He was assigned as adjutant of the 60th Virginia Infantry on in February of 1862 but was transferred back to the 1st on March 5, 1862. He was then assigned as a permanent member of the Adjutant General’s Department serving on the staffs of Gen. Braxton Bragg, General William E. Starke (his father who was killed at Antietam), General Winder and lastly General A. P. Hill. He was promoted major on February 19, 1864 and ended the war at Appomattox.

Starke died in Vicksburg Mississippi on September 5, 1878 and is buried there in Cedar Hill Cemetery. [ad] [ph:L]
