Seated view of Girault in uniform. He wears a double-breasted frock with collar and sleeve insignia, and holds his gauntlets. The image is clear with good contrast. Photographer's backmark, A. Constant, New Orleans. Period pencil signature is on back and are pencil notes from Mr. Turner.
Identified as John F. Girault who served initially with the Louisiana Confederate Guards and later on General Staff as A.A.G.
Girault joined the LA. Guards (P.A.C.S.) as Captain of Company D. He was promoted to Lt. Colonel and then Colonel. This unit disbanded in May 1862. He was commissioned a Captain on 7/16/62 in the Asst. Adjutant General's Department. Promoted to Major on 2/2/63. Served with Smith and Polk. Captured at Vicksburg on 7/4/63 and exchanged. Continued to serve in the A.A.G. Department throughout the war.
After the war he became an Episcopal minister. He died in 1889 and is buried in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans.
