Bust view of Confederate Chaplain R.K. Porter. The image is clear with light contrast. There is a period ink signature below the photo, "Yours affly / R.K. Porter". No photographer's backmark. Pencil identification on back by Mr. Turner.
R.K. Porter was appointed Chaplain to Cobb's Georgia Legion in July of 1861. In April of 1863 he resigned his post. Porter was active in Confederate veteran's affairs after the war.
Cobb's Georgia Legion was organized by Howell Cobb during the spring of 1861 and soon moved to Virginia. The legion was composed of cavalry, infantry, and artillery, but did not serve as one command.
From the collection of the late William Turner. [jet] [ph:L]
