CDV is of Kilpatrick posed seated with one arm resting on a table. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with only a single star visible on each shoulder and matching dark trousers with an officer’s thin leg stripe. His coat is opened slightly to reveal a matching dark military vest. In his lap is a dark slouch hat.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Paper is lightly toned while the mount has clipped corners.

Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. Top has a period pencil ID of “KILPATRICK.”

Hugh Judson Kilpatrick was born January 14, 1836 in Wantage, New Jersey.

After graduating from West Point in May of 1861 Kilpatrick took a commission as Captain in the 5th New York Zouaves and was wounded at Big Bethel. He then took a commission as Lieutenant –Colonel of the 2nd New York Cavalry. He took part in almost every major engagement of the Army of the Potomac commanding his regiment and then a Brigade. He became a Brigadier General on June 14, 1863and was heavily involved in the Gettysburg Campaign. In February of 1864 he led an ill-fated raid on Richmond. He then went west to Sherman’s Army and was wounded at Resaca. He returned to duty in July of 1864 and went with Sherman to the sea and into the Carolinas. He was promoted to Major General on June 19, 1865. After the war he served as US Minister to Chile, ran for Congress twice and lost. He returned to duty in Chile and died there on December 4, 1881 and was buried at West Point.  [ad] [ph:L]
