Ira Blake Goodrich was born in Fitchburg on February 8, 1842. He was listed as a 19 year old machinist when he enlisted as a corporal in Company D, 21^st Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to 1^st sergeant on July 23, 1862 but was captured at Chantilly on September 1, 1862. He was commissioned a 2^nd lieutenant the next day and returned to his Company after being paroled. On January 15, 1863 Goodrich made 1^st lieutenant and was mustered out at the expiration of his term of service on August 30, 1864.

After the war he lived in Boston and worked in the railroad business. He was also a member of the Kinsley Post #113 of the GAR. He died on August 25, 1915 and is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

The 21^st Massachusetts served with the 9^th Corps during most of its service seeing action at Roanoke Island, New Berne, 2^nd Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Bethesda Church, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad and Poplar Springs Church.   [ad] [ph:L]
