ID is in modern pencil however it is confirmed by another image of Scammell found on-line. A Xerox copy of that image comes with this one.

William Henry Scammell was born in Milford, Massachusetts on June 21, 1838. The twenty-three-year-old enlisted as a Private in Company G, 40^th New York Infantry at Yonkers on June 21, 1861.

The regiment, known as the Mozart Regiment, was assigned to the 3^rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac. During his early service Scammell would be wounded to an undetermined degree at Fair Oaks on June 1, 1862. A post-war newspaper article states that the bullet was never removed and Scammell carried it in his body for the rest of his life.

On August 15, 1863 he was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant and became a re-enlisted veteran on December 28, 1863. He was commissioned a 1^st Lieutenant and made Regimental Quartermaster on October 14, 1864. He was finally mustered out at Washington, D.C. on June 27, 1865.

After the war Scammell worked in the hotel business. He died in Milford, Massachusetts on May 26, 1880 and is buried there in Pine grove Cemetery.

The 40^th New York served in the 3^rd and 2^nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and saw action at Williamsburg, Fair Oakes, Glendale, Malvern Hill, 2^nd Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Weldon Railroad, Hatcher’s Run and Sailors Creek. During its service the regiment lost 32 officers and 398 men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded and survived.
