Oval bust view of Ward in uniform. He is wearing a single-breasted jacket with shoulder tabs. Image is clear. Mount features a printed “picture frame” for the photo. Period ink “Yours Truly” along bottom. Corners of mount have been trimmed. Period pencil note on back reads, “Don’t think this a Union boy Hattie for it is not but he has on our clothing he belongs to the 2d Ky Cav. / Mr. John Ward.” Photographer’s backmark, D.F. Brandon, Camp Douglas with piece of revenue stamp.

The 2nd Kentucky Cavalry regiment was formed by John Hunt Morgan. John Ward enlisted on 4/1/1862 at Huntsville, Alabama, as a private in Company A, 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. It is unknown when he was captured and sent to Camp Douglas. He is listed as being discharged on 8/2/1862.

Camp Douglas, in Chicago, Illinois, sometimes described as "The North's Andersonville," was one of the largest Union Army prisoner-of-war camps for Confederate soldiers taken prisoner during the American Civil War. Camp Douglas became a permanent prisoner-of-war camp from January 1863 to the end of the war in May 1865. In the aftermath of the war, Camp Douglas eventually came to be noted for its poor conditions and death rate estimated at about seventeen percent. Some 4,275 Confederate prisoners were known to be re-interred from the camp cemetery to a mass grave at Oak Woods Cemetery after the war.
