CDV is a three-quarter seated view of a young 1st lieutenant posed with one arm resting on a table. He wears a dark frock coat with clearly visible 1st lieutenant shoulder straps and matching dark trousers with a visible light-colored officer’s leg stripe.
Contrast and clarity are very good. Top corners of the mount are just barely clipped otherwise the paper and mount are good.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for J. W. HINE… OTEGO, N.Y. Reverse also has a cancelled orange 2 cent tax stamp.
With the image is a modern note that reads “THIS CDV COULD BE LT. RICHARD H. TREADWELL FROM OTEGO, N.Y.” The rank of the subject, the place where the photograph was taken and the tax stamp dating the image to 1864 or later do match up with the possible ID but until a named image surfaces we will not know for sure.
Richard Hayden Treadwell was born in Essex, Connecticut on February 2, 1835.
He enlisted as a private in Company G, 152nd New York at Otego on September 6, 1862. He served as the colonel’s orderly until he was promoted 1st lieutenant on November 28, 1864. He commanded his Company for a time and was discharged June 15, 1865.
Treadwell died at Blue Mountain Lake, New York on February 26, 1903 and is buried in the cemetery by that name located in Indian Lake, New York.
The 152nd New York served in the defenses of Washington until April of 1863 when it was sent to Suffolk, Virginia where it became part of the 7th Corps. It took part in the successful defense of Suffolk against Longstreet and then served with Keys on the Peninsula in July of 1863. The regiment was then shifted to New York City to quell the draft riots. It would remain there until October of 1863 when it was then assigned to the Army of the Potomac’s 2nd Division, 2nd Corps. It saw further action throughout Grant’s Overland Campaign being engaged in all the battles of that period from the Wilderness to Appomattox. [ad] [ph:L]
