CDV is a bust view of John E. Jackson of Petersburg, Virginia. He is pictured posed in right profile and wearing a light civilian suit.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Mount corners are clipped and paper shows some light surface dirt. Bottom center of the image is signed in period ink “YOUR FRIEND J. JACKSON.”

Reverse has an imprint for ROCKWELL & COWELL… PETERSBURG, VA. There is also a hand cancelled tax stamp with the date “AUG. 20, 1866.” Also written on the reverse above the photographer’s imprint in faint period pencil is “J. JACKSON” over “R. McCOLLY??”There is also collector information in pencil.

John Edward Jackson was born in Nottaway County, Virginia in 1834.

Jackson enlisted as a private in Company C, 12th Virginia Infantry on September 6, 1861. He was present for the fighting on the Peninsula but was hospitalized for a short period beginning July 15, 1862 and returning to duty on August 4, 1862. He was present for South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He received a furlough in August of 1863 and was present for Grant’s Overland Campaign fighting in the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad and Reams Station. Jackson was captured on October 27, 1864 at Burgess’ Mill and was confined at Point Lookout until exchanged on March 28, 1865. He was captured a second time at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia on April 5, 1865 and on the 10th was sent to Hart’s Island in New York Harbor. He was released on June 21, 1865.

After the war, Jackson worked at City Point where he was an agent for Mahone’s railroad. According to his obituary he committed suicide by “blowing his heart out” with a shotgun on July 28, 1873. He is buried in Petersburg’s Blanford Cemetery. He was married and the father of several children.    [ad] [ph:L]
