This is a carte de visite of Wade in full early-war uniform. Standing studio view wearing forage cap, shell jacket with chevrons and shoulder tabs, sash, sword belt, with sword at his side. Appears to be second generation photo where buttons were gilted on original and show no detail here. Image is clear with good contrast but this cdv has been treated rough with two hard folds (horizontal and vertical) that cross through the center of his image. Signed in ink on back, "Wm Henry Wade / owner & editor So. Ill. News / ... ". Photographer's backmark, Lumpkin & Tomlinson, Richmond.

Wade enlisted on April 20, 1861 as a Sergeant in Company H, 15th Virginia Infantry, the "Young Guards". He was discharged three months later.

William Henry Wade was a native of Richmond, Va., where he learned the trade of a printer and was employed in the office of the "Enquirer". After his service in the "Young Guard" of Richmond he became the editor of the "Southern Illustrated News" the only pictorial paper published at the Confederate capital. He subsequently published a paper in Richmond called the "Evening News".  After the war, Wade went to Baltimore to work at a position on the "Baltimore Sun". He died in Baltimore in April 1882 and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
