Photograph is one of three taken by Isaac N. White and Joseph Kelly in Lexington, Virginia during the fall or winter of 1865-1866. The company took one outdoor view of Lee on Traveler and two indoor bust views of which this is one.
General Lee is shown from the lower-chest-up in Confederate uniform. He is posed looking straight into the camera. He wears is frock coat open to reveal his vest beneath.
Contrast is good but the clarity is a bit grainy. Mount has light surface dirt and the top corners are clipped.
Reverse has a very faint period inscription difficult to read. What can be made out says “PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN IN LEXINGTON… GENL. ROBERT E. LEE.” There is also some collector information in pencil.
Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner. [ad] [ph:L]
