Full standing view of Chaplain John H. Rouse in the classic Napoleonic pose. He leans against a cane and has one hand thrust in his coat. He wears a black frock coat with cloth covered buttons and matching black trousers.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount are very good.

Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. Top has period ink inscription “JOHN H. ROUSE CHAPLAIN FOSTER HOSPITAL U S A NEW BERN, NC.” There is also some modern collector information in light pencil at bottom.

John Hill Rouse was born in Griswold, Connecticut in 1807. He had parishes in Hamden and Bethany, Connecticut, Wickford, Rhode Island and Clappville, Massachusetts.

On July 2, 1862 he was commissioned in the US Volunteers Hospital Chaplains and was assigned to North Carolina where he served at Foster Hospital.

Rouse was mustered out on August 4, 1865.

After the war Rouse continued to preach the Gospel until his death on July 16, 1870. He is buried in Gore Cemetery, Oxford, Massachusetts.  [AD] [ph:L]
