Image is of David H. Bradlee posed by a draped chair. He wears a dark frock coat open at the midriff and light trousers. 1st Lieutenant shoulder straps are plainly visible and in his left hand he holds a dark McDowell style forage cap with an infantry hunting horn on the front with a regimental number at center.
Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount is good. Paper has one or two spots of discoloration but nothing that touches the subject.
Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. There is a period pencil ID that reads “LT. BRADLEY ADJ. 13th MASS.” Below this in old modern ink is “1ST LIEUT. DAVID H. BRADLEE, ADJUTANT 13 MASS. VOL. INF.”
David Henry Bradlee was a 34 year old clerk living in Boston when he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 13th Massachusetts Infantry on July 16, 1861. He was mustered out at Boston on August 1, 1864.
The 13th Massachusetts served in the 3rd Corps of the Army of Virginia and in the 1st and 5th Corps of the Army of the Potomac. They fought at 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church and Petersburg. [ad][ph:L]
