View is of Colonel Charles E. Griswold in a classic Napoleonic pose. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps.

Charles Edward Griswold was born in Boston on November 16, 1834. He was a graduate of Norwich University and was a merchant in Boston when he was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the 22^nd Massachusetts on September 12, 1861. He would be made colonel on June 16, 1862.

The 22^nd was assigned to the 3^rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and was engaged on the Peninsula at Yorktown, Mechanicsville, Gaines’ Mill and Malvern Hill. They were also present for Antietam after which Colonel Griswold resigned due to ill health.

Griswold was next commissioned colonel of the 56^th Massachusetts on July 14, 1863. The 56^th was assigned to the 9^th Corps and saw action for the first time in the Wilderness. On the second day of that battle the 56^th was heavily engaged near the intersection of the Brock and Plank Roads. Colonel Griswold was shot in the neck and killed while rallying his men during the fighting.

Colonel Griswold’s body was returned to Massachusetts and buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.  [ad][ph:L]
