Photo is a chest-up view of Kean in a dark shell jacket with large flat buttons that could be either wood or bone.

Contrast and clarity are good. Paper has some light staining in the lower left corner. Mount has been trimmed at top and lower corners have been clipped.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for C. R. REES & CO… RICHMOND, VA. 1868. ID is written in modern pencil on the reverse.

Otho Garland Kean was born in Goochland County, Virginia in 1845. He enlisted as a private in the Botetourt Light Artillery of Virginia on March 12, 1862. He was captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and was later exchanged.

On September 30, 1863 Kean was transferred to 1st Company of Virginia’s Rockbridge Artillery. He was present with the battery from November of 1863 to September 2, 1864 when he was sent to a Richmond hospital suffering from debility. While there he received a 30 day furlough. He returned to the battery in November of 1864 and was present till the surrender at Appomattox.

After the war, Kean practiced law in Richmond where he died in September of 1890 being buried in Hollywood Cemetery.    [ad][ph:L]
