Image is a three-quarter standing view of McVeigh in the uniform of a VMI cadet standing with arms crossed over his chest.

Contrast and clarity are good. Paper has a small chip at upper left corner and bottom edge of paper and mount have been slightly trimmed.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for TANNER & VAN NESS… LYNCHBURG, VA. ID is from a roster clipping tucked in the back of the CDV holder.

Newton McVeigh was born July 13, 1846 in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a member of the Class of 1867 at VMI and during the battle of New Market he served as a private in Company A of the Cadet Battalion.

He left school and joined with Mosby’s Cavalry.

After the war McVeigh entered the merchant business and made his living as a salesman. He died on June 21, 1904 and is buried in Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery.  [ad] [ph:L]
