CDV is a chest-up view of Clark wearing a dark civilian suit, white shirt and dark bowtie.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount are very good. Bottom of mount has the photographer’s mark for H. B. HULL of PARKERSBURG, W. VA.

Reverse is blank but for a period pencil inscription of “AUG 20, ’71 AT SUNDAY SCHOOL.” There is also some collector information in pencil as well as Clark’s name. ID is confirmed by an identified on-line image.

Gaylord Blair Clark was born on April 16, 1846 in Mobile, Alabama. He was a member of the VMI Class of 1867 and served as a corporal in Company D of the Cadet Battalion and is listed as a New Market Cadet.

After the war he graduated from VMI as a civil engineer and engaged in locating the Alabama Grand Trunk Railway. Later he studied law and was admitted to the bar in Mobile. He was also very active in Democratic Party politics.

Clark died on June 14, 1893 and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. He was pre-deceased by his wife. The couple had three children, two living to adulthood. [ad] [ph:L]
