Chest-up view of Robert Burdell sporting a heavy goatee and wearing the usual dark suit.

Contrast and clarity are good as is the mount and paper which show only minor surface dirt from age and storage. Bottom front of the image has a very light period notation that reads “ROBBIE.”

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for GEO. S. COOK… CHARLESTON. In period pencil just above the back mark is “R. W. BURDELL.”

Robert Burdell enlisted as a private in Company B, 1st Battalion South Carolina Infantry, also known as the Charleston Battalion, at Camp Gist on March 24, 1862.

On September 5, 1862 he was assigned to detached service with the chief of ordnance in Charleston as an artificer.

Records show that he died of typhoid fever on May 25, 1863. The Charleston Daily Courier for Tuesday, May 26, 1863 carries an announcement of his funeral to be held at 10 am that morning in Flinn’s church but no burial location could be found.    [ad] [ph:L]
