Image is a bust view of a bearded soldier wearing a dark frock coat with fold down collar. On his left chest he wears a black felt oval outlined in bullion with a bullion rectangle at center that resembles a lieutenant’s bar. He does not wear shoulder straps.
Contrast and clarity are good. Paper and mount show light surface dirt. Bottom center of the mount has a period pencil ID of “SURGEON HENDRICKS.”
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for O. J. SMITH… NEW BERNE, N.C. [ad][ph:L]
