CDV shows Sturgis posed by a table with his arms crossed at his waist. His Model 1852 Navy officer’s sword is leaning against the table next to him and he holds his visor cap in his hand by his right side. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat and matching trousers. The frock coat has shoulder straps that lack any insignia in the rank field.
Contrast and clarity are excellent as is the mount and paper. Bottom center of the mount is embossed with “E. JACOBS” in an arc over “N.O.” Mark is flanked by “FRIENDLY YOURS” in period ink
Reverse is blank but for a period ink inscription at bottom that reads “A. M. HENRY STURGIS, BRIDGEPORT, CON.”
Very little can be found in the records about Sturgis. The Navy and Marine Corps register shows that Henry L. Sturgis was born in Massachusetts and that he served as both an acting master and a paymaster in the US Navy from 1862-1865. [ad][ph:L]
