Standing studio image of Thorn in Naval uniform. Clear image with good contrast. Wearing double-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps. Also wears waist belt, two-piece Navy buckle, with his Naval sword hanging at his side. He proudly holds his cap facing the camera. On the front of the cap is a wreath surrounding the Paymaster’s insignia.
Typical mount with rules around edge. There is a fold that runs through the face. There is a period pencil signature along side of the image on the front. Back of mount has patriotic “Beers & Mansfields” New Haven photographer’s imprint. Above the backmark in period ink is, “Paymaster Thorn, U.S.N.” [jet] [ph:L]
