John W. McLane was from Erie, PA and was 41 years old when he enlisted. At the time he was serving as Sheriff of Erie County, Pennsylvania. He helped recruit what was to become the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned its Colonel and commander on July 24, 1861. He led the unit through the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campaign until he was killed in action at the June 27, 1862 Battle of Gaines' Mill. Col. McLane received a posthumous promotion to Brigadier General in 1961. The promotion had been in the works when he fell in battle, and had not been completed for nearly a century. He is buried in Erie Cemetery. [jet][ph:L]
