Image is of Hezekiah Watkins in a dark double-breasted frock coat with black felt collar.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Paper and mount are clean. Bottom of the mount is marked BRADY and WASHINGTON.

Reverse has Brady’s photographer’s imprint along with a nice period ink inscription of “HESEKIAH WATKINS, LIEUTENANT COLONEL, BVT. COLONEL U.S.V.” There is also a worn 2 cent tax stamp and some other information in pencil.

Hezekiah Watkins was born August 24, 1835 in Liberty, New York. He was a Yale student graduating in the class of 1856 and ended into the practice of law.

He was commissioned as adjutant of the 143rd New York Infantry on August 2, 1862 at Monticello. He was promoted to captain of Company A on October 8, 1862, major on November 9, 1863 and lieutenant-colonel on January 9, 1864 and was wounded in the battle of Averysboro on March 16, 1865.

After the war he was appointed by President Chester A. Arthur as a Commissioner to inspect portions of the Northern Pacific Railroad. While performing that duty he died in St. Clair County, Michigan on February 12, 1884 and was buried in Liberty Cemetery in Liberty, New York.  [ad][ph:L]
