Taken by Mathew Brady in 1864, this photo depicts the profile of President Abraham Lincoln used on the U.S. penny. It has been trimmed at the corners to form an octagonal shape and two sets of pinpoint holes at top and bottom suggest some type of previous mounting. Some of the mounting card border is visible at left and right, while all edges and corners remain sharp with minimal dirt or staining.
The reverse is clean and the stylized text at center reads “BRADY’S NATIONAL PHOOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT GALLERIES No. 352 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. and Broadway & Tenth St., N.Y.” A faint penciled notation reads “A. Lincoln given to W.M. Jones Chief of Consular Bureau Dept. of State – Wash D.C. 1863 – 4 – 5 (probably a separate notation meaning years 1863, 64, and 65) and carried for several yrs./0-89 B”. Overall measurements are 2.3” x 3”.
There is verbal information that Jones was noted in a volume of Who’s Who in America, but this is unconfirmed. Further research certainly a possibly.
A rare Brady CDV and one of the most recognizable portrait photos of all time. A very interesting piece for the collector. [cm/ld][ph:L]
