This is a very nice “from-life” view of Custer by John Goldin & Co., reference Katz #70 in his "Custer in Photographs", taken in May 1865. Custer is shown in three-quarter seated view, resting one arm on the back of the photographer’s chair, wearing a regulation Major General’s frock coat and shoulder straps, but wearing his broad-brimmed slouch hat with one side turned up. His mustache, goatee, and long curls on full display.
The image has excellent clarity and contrast. There is the slightest of chips to the image on the lower, left corner. The mount features the typical single rule printed around the outer edge and is untrimmed. The reverse has Goldin’s printed photographer backmark at center: “JOHN GOLDIN & CO. / PHOTOGRAPHERS / Vignette Specialite / No.4 Market Space / Pa. Ave. / WASHINGTON, D.C.” all on an artist’s palette, with a notice at bottom regarding additional copies, etc. Some light staining on reverse.
A very fine Custer image. [jet][ph:L]
