This is a rare view of Custer by Browne at Kilpatrick's HQ, reference Katz #26V in his "Custer in Photographs", taken in January 1864. This is a bust view of Custer, wearing a non-regulation Brigadier General’s frock coat and shoulder insignia. He has a bushy mustache, but not the long curls of other years.
The image has good clarity and contrast. The plain mount is trimmed at the bottom and has two pin holes at top edge. The reverse has very rare Browne's printed photographer backmark at center: “WM. FRANK BROWNE, / PHOTOGRAPHER, / Kilpatrick's Div. Hd. Qrs., / 5th Mich. Cav.”
A very fine Custer image with rare backmark. [jet][ph:L]
