This is a very nice cdv photograph of Lewis standing in full uniform. Great view of him wearing single-breasted frock with shoulder straps, sash, sword belt, leaning on his sword, and holding his slouch hat. Very clear with excellent contrast.
Typical mount with ruled border; may be slightly trimmed on right side. Beaufort, SC photographer’s backmark of “S.A. Cooley.”
William B. Lewis was 21 years old when he enlisted on 8/15/1862 at Hancock, NY as a 1st Sergeant in Company “F” of the 144th New York Infantry. Lewis was promoted to Sergeant Major on 4/6/1863, 2nd Lieutenant on 4/21/1863 (Co. F), and 1st Lieutenant on 1/1/1864. He was Mustered Out on 6/25/1865 at Hilton Head, SC. The 144th spent much of its time along coastal Virginia and in the Department of the South. [jet][ph:L]
