This is a very nice cdv photograph of Eli Gibbons seated in uniform. Three-quarter studio view of him wearing single-breasted frock with shoulder straps, and holding his forage cap. Very clear with good contrast.

Typical mount with ruled border; untrimmed. Nicely signed in ink on back, “Your Truly Eli Gibbons Lieut. 144th N.Y. V.” Blue revenue stamp and Elmira, New York photographer’s backmark of “Morehouse & Parsons, at A.P. Hart’s Gallery.”

Eli Gibbons from Franklin, NY was 21 years old when he enlisted on 9/27/1862 as a Private in Company “D” 144^th New York Infantry. The 144^th spent much of its time along coastal Virginia and in the Department of the South. Gibbons was promoted to Corporal on 1/25/1863, Sergeant on 3/5/1863, 1st Sergeant on 9/15/1863, and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 11/18/1864. He was Mustered Out on 6/25/1865 at Hilton Head, SC. He died in 1925.  [jet][ph:L]
