A fine cdv photograph of the group, dressed “in the identical costumes worn before Emperor Louis Napoleon and the Empress Eugenie, at the Palace of the Tuilleries, Nov. 29, 1864.” Image retains good contrast. Typical ruled mount with printed description at bottom; untrimmed. The back is signed in ink by all four, Compliments of Charles S. Stratton, Lavinia Warren Stratton, G.W.M. Nutt, and Minnie Warren. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony, New York City, NY, c.1846-1884.
General Tom Thumb and Commodore Nutt were both diminutive performers with P.T. Barnum's circus and museum, known for their small stature and stage presence. General Tom Thumb (Charles Sherwood Stratton) was a well-established star, while Commodore Nutt (George Washington Morrison Nutt) joined Barnum's attractions later, initially causing some confusion with Stratton due to their similar appearance. They both achieved fame and were part of the "little couple" alongside Lavinia Warren and her sister Minnie Warren, who also had dwarfism. [jet][ph:L]
