A very fine cdv photograph of Smith in uniform. In this waist up view he wears a double-breasted General Officer’s frock coat with collar insignia partially visible under his beard and galloons on the cuffs. Image retains fine clarity and very good contrast. Typical ruled mount is untrimmed and in fine condition. The back has printed E. & H.T. Anthony, New York backmark.

Edmund Kirby Smith (May 16, 1824 – March 28, 1893) was a Confederate States Army general, who oversaw the Trans-Mississippi Department (comprising Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, western Louisiana, Arizona Territory and the Indian Territory) from 1863 to 1865 after being seriously wounded at First Bull Run. Before the Civil War, Smith served as an officer of the United States Army.  [jet][ph:L]
