This cdv image shows us a waist-up view of Custer. He wears a regulation double-breasted Brigadier General’s frock coat and shoulder straps. He has a bushy mustache, but not the long curls of other years. Reference Katz #29 in his "Custer in Photographs", taken in February 1864.
The image features lesser clarity and contrast and is a copy-shot or “pirate view” of Brady's original image made by a taking a photo of a printed copy of the image and then printing more copies from that photographic plate, inevitably resulting in a loss of quality.
The plain mount is untrimmed. The reverse has printed photographer backmark at center: “PHILADELPHIA PHOTOGRAPHIC CO. / CHESTNUT ST. / 730 / PHILADELPHIA.” [jet][ph:L]
