William Austin Brockenbrough enlisted on 6/4/1861 as a 1st Lieutenant and commissioned into Company E of the 40th Virginia Infantry. He was promoted to Adjutant on 3/31/1863 and transferred from Company E into Field and Staff.  He was absent once from 11/30/1864 for an unspecified length of time, but quickly returned to duty. He was active in Confederate Veteran Affairs, acting as his local UCV Camp Commander until his death in 1896 in Richmond.  The 40th Virginia had a lengthy career from 1861 until surrendering at Appomattox – with distinctions for bloody service in some of the most violent engagements of the war.

The Carte-de-Visite photograph is mounted to a typical card with a double-gold accent border.  All edges and corners are sharp.  The image itself is in excellent condition with only minor discoloration localized to the left top corner. No writing is noted on the front of the photo or card. The reverse features a stylized photographer’s logo with text reading “P.L. PERKINS. 205 & 207 Balt. St. Second Floor, PHOTOGRAPHER”.  Written in penciled script is “Capt. Wm. Austin Brockenbrough Richmond Co. – Va – C.S.A.” and printed text along the bottom edge reads “Duplicates can always be obtained from the negative from which this was taken.” Measurements are 2.4” x 4”.

A very nice Confederate photograph of a man who saw the worst the Eastern Theater of the Civil War had to offer.  [cm] [ph:L]
