Charles H. Masury was born on 2/11/1842 in Wenham, MA.  He was 19-years-old, worked as a Morocco Tanner by trade, and resided in Danversport, MA when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D of the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. On 2/25/1863, he was promoted to Lieutenant of Company M and subsequently transferred within the regiment. On 6/6/1864, Charles was wounded at Petersburg, not long after the regiment had suffered hundreds of casualties at Spotsylvania and not long before they would lose over 100 more in direct assaults against Petersburg.  Charles would recover and elect to muster out on 7/8/1864.  After the war, he lived at 48 Elm Street in Danvers, MA and remained an active member of GAR Post # 90.

Through its four years of service, the 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery had a total of 2552 soldiers in its ranks, consisting of 24 field officers and staff, 111 line officers, and 2417 enlisted men. A total of 486 officers and men were lost, 215 of them killed or died of wounds, 115 died by disease or accident, 156 died as prisoners, and four dead listed as MIA.

This CDV is mounted to a common card, with partial inked signature/lettering along the bottom edge.  The lower left corner of the image has been cleanly cut, while the upper right shows two sections of paper loss and a subtle crease.  The bulk of the image shows good contrast and remains both clean and clear.  The edges and corners of the card are complete and mostly sharp, with the corners showing very minor rolling. The reverse is clean with minor foxing and light, localized edge discoloration. Older penciled markings read “18.00 / 734 / $ - 125” and a stylized photographer logo reads “R. W. ADDIS PHOTOGRAPHER 308 PENNA AVENUE WASHINGTON D. C.”

Measures 3.9” x 2.5”

A nice image of one of the heavy artillerymen infamously thrown into the meat grinder that was 1864 in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War.   [cm] [ph:L]
