This rare Carte-de-Visite of General Winfield “The Superb” Hancock offers a seated view of the man against a plain backdrop. The image is mounted to a typical card with a double gold border pattern. Foxing is noted across the front face of the card and image. All edges and corners remain sharp.
The reverse features penciled writing reading “Winfield Scott / Gen Hancock / Major General / Gettysburg/wounded / Cold Harbor / Wilderness / Petersburg”. A stylized photographer’s back mark logo reads “Published by E & H.T. ANTHONY, / 501 Broadway, / NEW YORK / FROM / PHOTOGRAPHIC NEGATIVE / in / BRADY’S / National Portrait Gallery”. Very minor, scattered foxing is noted across the reverse face. Overall measurements are 2.4” x 4”.
A great photograph of one of the Civil War’s most prominent figures. Surely a welcome addition to any discerning collection. [cm] [ph:L]
