John W. Hambleton enlisted on 6/1/1861 as a Major, and was commissioned into Field & Staff Tennessee 15th Infantry.

15th Infantry Regiment was organized at Jackson, Tennessee, in June, 1861 and in July totaled 744 men. Its members were from Memphis and the counties of Weakley, Lake, Madison, and Shelby. Company G contained men from Kentucky and Southern Illinois. After fighting at Belmont, Shiloh, and Perryville, the unit was assigned to Bate's, Tyler's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. During June, 1863, it was consolidated with the 37th Regiment. It was active at Hoover's Gap, then participated in the campaigns of the army from Chickamauga to Atlanta, returned to Tennessee with Hood, and saw action in North Carolina. The regiment reported 200 casualties at Shiloh and had 34 disabled at Perryville. The 15th/37th lost fifty-eight percent of the 202 engaged at Chickamauga and in December, 1863, totaled 234 men and 148 arms. Only a handful surrendered on April 26, 1865. The field officers were Colonels Charles M. Carroll and Robert C. Tyler; Lieutenant Colonels Thorndike Brooks and James H.R. Taylor; and Majors John W. Hambleton, John F. Hearn, and John M. Wall.

This image features a waist-up view of Hambleton and written in scripted pencil across the bottom is “Jon (?) W. Hambleton”.  The photo is mounted to a common card with a gold, double-line edge pattern.  All corners and edges remain sharp and complete. The reverse is mostly clean, save for some very minor foxing and original ink smudging near the back mark, which reads, “Wm. F. Shorey, / 87 W. Baltimore Street, / Baltimore, Md.”  Overall measurements are 2.4” x 3.9”.

An excellent, rare Carte-de-Visite image of a Western Confederate – an artifact of the bloody and desperate service of the 15th Tennessee.  [cm] [ph:L]

A FINE EXAMPLE OF A CONFEDERATE INFANTRYMAN'S KEPI

This cap's crown, top and base band are made from a medium weight open weave woolen fabric which may be a blend of sorts. It certainly looks "home spun". The kepi gives indications of being a depot made item but may actually have been homemade as… (1268-037). Learn More »
