The Civil War saw many common men elevated to the status of hero, and Francis Jay Herron was one of these men. Herron would rise from his position of bank clerk before the war, to a Major General and Medal of Honor recipient, and eventually falling from grace after the war to die penniless.
This Carte-de-Visite image features a standing view of the General, with a muted red double-border. The mounting card is labeled “CARTE DE VISITE. J. Sidney Brown, Artist, 82 North Fourth Street, St. Louis, Mo.” Very slight corner wear is noted in the form of mild rounding. The reverse is clean, with a penciled notation reading “Maj. Gen. Francis J. Herron / from Iowa, born 1837 / commanded Army of the Frontier / received surrender of Confederate forces west of the Mississippi in May 1865”.
Certainly, an uncommonly seen man in currently offered period images. Ideal for the well-rounded Civil War collection. [cm] [ph:L]
